For freshman/transfer Journalism majors with 12-18 EIU credit hours. Requires significant participation at Daily Eastern News, 500-word essay.

The following criteria must be met:
- At the time of selection in the spring semester, the recipient(s) must be a full-time freshman or transfer student at Eastern in good academic standing majoring in Journalism who has earned 12 to 18 credit hours at Eastern.
- The recipient(s) must have demonstrated intent to pursue a career in news-editorial journalism through significant participation at the Daily Eastern News.
- The recipient(s) must describe in an essay of about 500 words how his/her participation in student or other news media while at Eastern Illinois University will enhance his/her preparation for a career in news-editorial journalism.
- The recipient(s) must demonstrate through his/her first semester grades at Eastern Illinois University potential for academic achievement at the university.
- Financial need may be considered as a deciding factor after other criteria are met.
This award is announced in the Spring semester and pays the following Fall semester.
