Presidential Scholars Award

For exceptionally strong incoming freshman students, Pine Honors College offers three different awards. This application applies for the Pemberton Presidential and Presidential Scholars awards.

The Pemberton Presidential Scholarship:
The most prestigious of Honors College scholarships, the Pemberton Presidential Scholars Award covers on-campus room and board (approximately $9,500 per year) and up to $11,000 per year towards tuition and fees for four years. Each freshman Honors College class will include approximately five Pemberton Presidential Scholars. This particular scholarship cannot be combined with the Commitment to Excellence Award that students would otherwise receive from EIU.

The Presidential Scholarship:
The Presidential Scholars Award is up to $11,000 per year for four years, which is approximately the amount for tuition and fees for a full-time student taking 15 semester hours. The award is not limited to tuition costs, however. Each freshman Honors College class will include approximately fifteen Presidential Scholars. This particular scholarship cannot be combined with the Commitment to Excellence Award or Honors Award.

To retain their awards, all Honors scholarship recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.40, and to remain in good academic and judicial standing with Eastern Illinois University, the University Honors Program, and the Presidential Scholars Program.

In evaluating applications we consider high school transcripts, extracurricular and volunteer activities, personal essays, and a recommendation from a high school teacher or administrator. We are particularly looking for leadership potential, ambition to make the most of college, and intellectual maturity. For the Pemberton Presidential Scholarship, the financial need of academically eligible students may also be considered. All applications are reviewed by the Honors Council (a faculty and student body).

The following criteria must be met:
Eligibility requirements for the Pemberton Presidential Scholars award: composite ACT score of 31 (or an SAT score of 1390) and 3.75 GPA (unweighted, cumulative on a 4-point scale).

Eligibility requirements for the Presidential Scholars Award: composite ACT score of 30 (or SAT equivalent score of 1360) and either unweighted high school GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) or ranking in the top 90th percentile of the graduating class.
OR
composite ACT score of 28 (or SAT equivalent score of 1300) and either unweighted high school GPA of 3.75 (on a 4.00 scale) or ranking in the top 95th percentile of the graduating class.

For both the Pemberton Presidential and Presidential scholarships, a high school teacher or administrator who knows you well must submit a letter of recommendation – a request will be sent from the scholarship portal when you provide their email address.
