Richard Icen Fourth Estate Award
The following criteria must be met:
1. The recipient(s) must be a full-time student, majoring in Journalism, in good academic standing, accepted to Eastern Illinois University.
2. The recipient(s) must have completed at least 90 semester hours.
3. The recipient(s) must be nominated by members of the Journalism faculty, selected by the Journalism Department’s Scholarship Committee, and confirmed by the faculty as a whole.
4. Nominees for this award must submit: a. Clips or tapes of news stories and/or editorials demonstrating a commitment to journalistic practices going beyond routine coverage. b. A summary of activities that indicate an interest in maintaining and promoting the role of a free press. c. A 500-750-word essay which defines the candidate’s philosophy of the role of a free press and the relationship of his/her career goals to these ideals.
Recipients may be eligible to be nominated for, and receive, the award again provided they continue to meet the criteria stated above.
The award will be made payable in the Fall and Spring semester.
