Academic Excellence Communication Studies Talented Student Award

This is a tuition waiver to provide financial assistance to students with academic talent or special status; fees are not waived.

The following criteria must be met:

Undergraduate Students:
1. The recipient(s) must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or 3.00 GPA in high school, admitted to Communication Studies.

2. The recipient(s) shall demonstrate proficiency of some unique talent or skill that can benefit the department.
OR
The recipient(s) shall participate in a University or department priority activity.
OR
The recipient(s) shall be selected by a faculty panel to receive a scholarship or other award.

3. The recipient(s) must provide:
- Three letters of reference from individuals outside of the Communication Studies department who can attest to a student’s academic abilities.
OR
- One letter of recommendation authored by a departmental faculty.

Graduate Students:
1. The recipient(s) must be a Graduate student admitted to/enrolled in one of the CMN graduate programs:
Communication & Leadership
Communication Processes
Communication Studies
Communication Pedagogy

2. The recipient(s) must be a Full-time student. (9+ hours as a Graduate student).

3. The recipient(s) must maintain a 3.0 graduate GPA (after the first semester).

4. The recipient(s) shall demonstrate proficiency of some unique talent or skill that can benefit the department.
OR
The recipient(s) shall participate in a University or department priority activity.
OR
The recipient(s) shall be selected by a faculty panel to receive a scholarship or other award.

According to EIU’s Internal Governing Policy #73, this award is a “Tuition waiver to provide financial assistance to students with academic talent or special status; fees are not waived.” Therefore, students who already have a full tuition waiver or have no room in their financial aid package for tuition assistance are not eligible to receive this award.

Applications will be accepted in the Fall. Awards will be announced in the Fall and paid the following Spring semester.

  1. Please submit the name and email address for the individual you have asked to submit a letter of reference on your behalf. The reference must come from an EIU Communication Studies Faculty member who can attest to your academic achievement.
  2. Submit a well-written and coherent essay that highlights your achievements. (Such an essay may address: undergraduate research participation beyond the classroom, including honors or sponsored research projects; unique departmental contributions through service or engagement; demonstrable leadership in a registered student organization; contributions within the EIU community.)
