Biography of Dr. William A. Butler
Dr. William A. Butler served Eastern Illinois University with distinction as Chairman of the Department of Physics from 1970 to 1987. During his tenure, he was a visionary academic leader who helped shape programs that aligned scientific rigor with emerging societal and industry needs.
Dr. Butler played a pivotal role in the development of the Physics major with Energy Management and, in collaboration with the School of Business, the Energy Management degree. These innovative programs positioned Eastern Illinois University as an early leader in interdisciplinary education focused on energy systems, sustainability, and practical application-an impact that continues to influence the university’s academic direction.
Committed to preparing students for thoughtful leadership, Dr. Butler emphasized the importance of balancing environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability. His work laid a strong foundation for EIU’s ongoing leadership in sustainable energy management education.
In honor of his enduring legacy, Dr. Butler’s three daughters have established a fund to support students pursuing studies and leadership opportunities in sustainable energy management. This tribute reflects both Dr. Butler’s professional contributions and his Lasting commitment to educating future Leaders who will thoughtfully address the energy challenges of tomorrow.
